***MEDIA ADVISORY FOR JANUARY 23***
Forum To Address Inequities In Education On Long Island
ERASE Racism and the Long Island Index Will Release New Research Findings
WHAT: ERASE Racism will host a forum of education administrators and advocates to discuss inequities in education on Long Island. Both ERASE Racism and the Long Island Index will release new studies on the subject. The ERASE Racism study highlights the link between housing and school segregation and suggests ways that our highly fragmented public education system is disproportionately harming black and Latino students. The Long Island Index study addresses the persistence of economic and racial inequalities in education on Long Island.
The forum will address disparities in school funding, a rise in the number of students attending high-need schools, and the impact that the recession has had on the public school system. Speakers will discuss how changing student demographics alter the educational needs of the student body. Other topics include: how the new Common Core standards can lead to greater educational inequities throughout the public school system; how student tracking is perpetuating racial disparities in educational opportunity and outcome, and how ensuring common expectations for students can boost student performance.
